ARCHITECTURE / INTERIOR DESIGN
We designed the Villa Margherita, newly added to the former 11th century palace now home to the Belmond Hotel Caruso on the Amalfi coast.
Here, the ceilings are hand painted with trompe-l’oeil scenes of lemon groves and lush trellised gardens; antique floor tiles were laid; crown mouldings, architraves and doors redesigned; an original fireplace was restored; and vintage fabric used to line the insets of wardrobe doors.
The playful mix of high and low, antique and modern combines 18th century Neapolitan chairs, an antique bronze chandelier, Bessarabian rugs and a Venetian settee, designed and hand painted in the 18th century style, with prints by Jean Debuffet and Matisse, fabrics by Braquenié and Colefax and Fowler, throws by Hermès, and vintage scarves repurposed into quilted throw pillows. The mood is light, relaxed and breezy, perfect for its seaside locale.
